Abigail “Abby” Caruso (born 1938) is a New Radion Bay native by choice, waitress at the Dash & Eggs Diner, and the vigilante sidekick known as Flash FryOriginally arriving in the city as a runaway teenager, Abby became an adopted member of the McAllister family. By the events of Year Zero, she is Kayla McAllister’s closest friend and confidante.

EARLY LIFE

Abigail Caruso was born in 1938 in Chicago. Raised in an abusive household, she fled home as a teenager and traveled alone to New Radion Bay in search of independence. At approximately fifteen years old, she arrived with little money and no support system. A chance encounter with John “Buck” McAllister at the Dash & Eggs Diner altered her trajectory. Recognizing the signs immediately, Buck ensured she was fed and helped her secure employment at the diner.

Abby remained in New Radion Bay, building stability through work and grit. Over time, she developed a sister-like bond with Kayla McAllister and became a regular presence in the McAllister household.

An avid skater, Abby became quite adept, if not still quite reckless, on wheels.

IN YEAR ZERO

In Year Zero, Abby functions as a constant civilian presence during the unraveling of New Radion Bay. She is first contextualized through memory — a runaway who fled Chicago at fifteen after enduring abuse at the hands of her father. She arrived in New Radion Bay with thirty-seven stolen dollars and a backpack, choosing not to return. Her chance meeting with John “Buck” McAllister at the Dash & Eggs Diner marked the beginning of her integration into the McAllister family.

By 1957, Abby works as a waitress at the Dash & Eggs, moving through the chrome-tiled diner on roller skates with practiced speed. She is sharp-tongued, observant, and unafraid to defend herself — demonstrated when she slaps away unwanted advances from a drunken patron before Kayla intervenes.

Abby is present the night the emergency broadcast interrupts the Winter Special LightBall game. When the news anchor announces catastrophic failure at the New Radion Bay Atomic Facility, the diner descends into shock.

Buck reacts immediately. When he asks Abby if she has a car and learns she does not, he throws her his keys and gives a direct order: retrieve Kayla from the Radion School of Dance and take her to the safe room beneath the McAllister home.

Abby does not hesitate.

Drawing inspiration from her diner uniform roots and the city’s chrome-and-neon aesthetic, Abby adopts the moniker Flash FryWhere Swanblade represents precision and inheritance, Flash Fry embodies motion and immediacy.

Or, in other words: a reckless bravado that seems to always work out.
