Simon Langley (born 1932) is a former systems archivist employed at the Ice Cube Cryogenic Detention Facility and the primary architect behind the catastrophic breach that initiates the central conflict of Year Zero.

Highly intelligent but emotionally unstable, Simon develops a pathological fixation on Captain John “Buck” McAllister and his daughter, Kayla. After being terminated from his position at the Ice Cube, he orchestrates a calculated infiltration of the facility, releases cryogenically detained criminals, and engineers a citywide crisis designed to dismantle Buck’s legacy.

He later adopts the moniker “The Archivist.”

EARLY LIFE

Simon Langley was born in 1932 in London, England.

His father was an alcoholic and abusive; his mother emotionally distant and incapable of consistent affection. During a visit to the United States, his parents abandoned him, leaving him in the foster care system at a young age.

Simon grew up without stable attachment figures. His need for paternal identity redirected toward public icons — particularly Captain Atomic Ace.

As a boy, he obsessively collected newspaper clippings, serialized comics, and war photographs of Buck McAllister. He sketched heroic scenes in notebooks and internalized the mythology of Atomic-era heroism as a substitute for personal belonging.

Gifted in mathematics and computing, Simon eventually trained himself in systems architecture and cybernetics. His intelligence secured him employment at the Ice Cube Cryogenic Detention Facility, where he worked as an archivist responsible for monitoring pod integrity, system logs, and detainee records.

The Ice Cube became more than a workplace.

IN YEAR ZERO

In Year Zero, Simon’s private obsession escalates into public catastrophe.

While working at the Ice Cube, he begins copying encrypted detainee files and studying structural weaknesses in the facility’s automation systems. His fixation centers particularly on Jezebel, one of Buck’s most infamous adversaries.

Simon develops ritualistic behavior around her cryogenic pod — studying her file, touching the glass, imagining connection.

At a public gala event honoring New Radion Bay’s legacy, Simon approaches Kayla McAllister under the pretense of admiration. When a sketchbook falls open revealing obsessive and inappropriate drawings of her, Buck intervenes. Simon is publicly humiliated and shortly thereafter terminated from his position.

The dismissal becomes the catalyst.

He decides to reshape Kayla -- and their shared story.
