Vincenzo Esposito (born 1896) widely known as Steel Maw, is a New Radion Bay crime syndicate leader and decorated Pan-Pacific War veteran.

The son of a celebrated Italian boxer murdered by the Cosa Nostra, Esposito’s life was shaped by violence, honor, and a deep resentment toward inherited weakness. A strategic thinker with a volatile temper, Steel Maw built a criminal empire rooted in discipline and fear rather than chaos.

In Year Zero, he emerges as the principal organized crime antagonist, orchestrating coordinated assaults against Takeda Dynamics and the New Radion Bay Police in an attempt to destabilize the city and eliminate its remaining pillars of power.

Despite his brutality, his arc reveals complexity — particularly in his recognition of shared experience with John “Buck” McAllister and a respect for Kayla.

EARLY LIFE

Vincenzo's father was a respected professional boxer known for his refusal to throw fights for the Cosa Nostra. When he defied them publicly, he was murdered in front of Vincenzo — a lesson delivered to the community through blood.

Rather than discard the boy, the Cosa Nostra absorbed him.

Vincenzo was raised within the organization that killed his father. As a child, he ran errands, carried messages, and observed power structures from the inside. He learned early that loyalty was transactional and that strength commanded survival.

But he did not intend to remain a subordinate forever.

As a young man, Vincenzo left Sicily for America with a singular ambition: to build something that belonged to him. Not inherited. Not borrowed. Not owed.

Before fully entering the criminal world of New Radion Bay, he enlisted during the Pan-Pacific Conflict. War reshaped him. He distinguished himself in combat and sustained severe injuries that earned him a Purple Heart. During his service in the Pacific theater, he was critically wounded in Japan; losing a portion of his jaw. Rather than immediately return home, he remained abroad during recovery.

It was there that he received a reconstructed metallic jaw. The augmentation became both necessity and symbol. He returned to America not merely scarred, but altered. It earned him a new identity: Steel Maw, his father's old nickname.

Back in New Radion Bay, Vincenzo did not rejoin the fragmented crime families as a subordinate. He began consolidating territory, eliminating rivals, and restructuring operations under his command. He did not intend to recreate the Cosa Nostra. He wanted to improve upon it.

IN YEAR ZERO

In Year Zero, Steel Maw emerges as the central organized crime antagonist during the city’s renewed instability and his release from the Ice Cube.

When Kayla first appears publicly as a masked defender, other crime bosses dismiss her. Steel Maw does not. He warns them that McAllister must be taken seriously and acknowledges Commissioner Cain as a war hero whose edge remains intact.

The boy raised by killers and the daughter raised by a hero stand face to face; their commonalities louder than they would like to recognize.
